Ultraformer MPT is a non-invasive ultrasound treatment (HIFU) that delivers ultrasonic heat from the deep skin layers to the fascia (SMAS) to tighten sagging skin[1]. Research reports small changes, such as eyebrows lifting 0.47–1.7 mm and the area under the chin becoming slightly more defined, though the changes are not as dramatic as surgical or injection treatments[2][3]. In exchange, scarring is rare[2].
What does Ultraformer MPT do?
It is a device that heats only a specific depth inside the skin without damaging the surface[1]. The heated area contracts, and collagen is thought to be rebuilt over time, resulting in tightening[1].
Ultraformer is introduced as a device with interchangeable tips (cartridges) of different depths, allowing targeted application by layer[4]. However, the same literature notes that it has not received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)[4].
What did the research show in terms of results?
Changes are "small and gradual." In a literature review summarizing 16 studies (subjects female only), eyebrow position rose 0.47–1.7 mm and the area under the chin decreased by 26–45 square mm[3].
Physician assessment showed that 92% of subjects were rated as "improved" at 90 days, and this improvement persisted for 1 year[3]. Meanwhile, the percentage of subjects who self-reported "improved" was 42% at 90 days and 53% at 1 year[3].
There is this much difference in perception between physicians and patients. If you expect "a change clearly visible in the mirror," this treatment may disappoint.
Can it be used for double chin?
It is also used to reduce fat under the chin. There is a study of 30 people treated under the chin using MP mode (a method of applying treatment in small sections) with tips at depths of 4.5 mm and 6.0 mm[5].
However, follow-up in this study lasted only 4 weeks, so whether the effect persists longer is still unknown[5]. Additionally, fat dissolution may result in a hollowed appearance, which has been noted as a concern[4]. If your cheeks are naturally thin, consult carefully with your physician about where to apply the treatment.
What are the risks of pain and side effects?
Common side effects include redness, swelling, and temporary numbness[6]. In summarized reports, side effects centered on temporary redness and swelling, with numbness or bruising occurring in about 2%[3].
In research examining long-term effects, pain during treatment was mild to moderate, and most pain after treatment resolved within about 2 days[7].
Though rare, cases of eye injury after application around the eyes have been reported[6][8]. Because examples of white opacity remaining on the cornea (the surface of the pupil) have occurred, caution is needed when applying near the eyes[6].
How long does the effect last?
Few studies examine how long results last after a single treatment; the effect likely varies with skin condition, age, and lifestyle[9]. In summarized reports, physician assessment showed good results persisting for 1 year[3].
What should I confirm during consultation before treatment?
Ultraformer MPT is best suited for people who want to gently tighten mild sagging skin[2][3]. From an article alone, you cannot determine whether your sagging skin is amenable to ultrasound or whether you should consider thread lift or surgery.
During consultation, confirm the severity of sagging, the amount of fat in the cheeks and chin, the depth and location of application, and whether treatment will be applied around the eyes.
