Voluma XC is a hyaluronic acid designed to restore volume to the central face, such as cheeks that have become hollow with age[1][2]. In U.S. approval trials, 85.6% of people showed improvement in cheek volume deficit at 6 months, and 73.9% maintained this at 1 year[3]. At 2 years, nearly half of people still felt the effects, though duration varies among individuals[1].
Where is Voluma XC used?
Voluma XC is a formulation designed primarily to restore cheek volume.[1] It contains 20 mg of hyaluronic acid per mL and is a firmer gel with stronger lifting power than other products from the same manufacturer[1].
The basic application is injection into deep skin layers (subcutaneous or above bone) to restore cheek volume.[2] It contains the anesthetic lidocaine.[4]. There have also been trials using it in the temple hollows.[5].
How much does cheek volume change?
In a trial of 235 people aged 35–65 with insufficient cheek volume who received injections, 47 did not receive injections for comparison.[1] At 6 months, 85.6% of people who received an average of 5.07 mL showed improvement of one grade or higher.[3].
When measured by 3D imaging, cheek volume increased by an average of 6.8 mL at 6 months in those injected, compared to 0.8 mL in those who were not.[1] Meta-analysis of five randomized trials (748 people) also showed a higher rate of improvement in those who received hyaluronic acid compared to those who did not.[6].
What is the expected duration? How many people maintain results for 2 years?
At 1 year, 73.9% of people still had results.[3] In analysis followed for 2 years, nearly half maintained effects at 2 years.[1].
Textbooks also state that hyaluronic acid typically lasts 12–24 months depending on the product.[7] In a separate comparative trial, volume in the cheeks, temples, and jawline was maintained at 18 months.[8] "2 years" is a guideline for those with longer-lasting results; not everyone maintains results for 2 years.
Who is it suited for, and what are its limitations?
It is suited for those concerned about reduced central facial volume and hollow-appearing cheeks.[1] For temple hollows, 80.4% showed improvement at 3 months, exceeding the 13.5% in the untreated group.[5].
Because this is a deep-layer formulation, when addressing skin texture or fine lines on the surface, different products should be used.[2] The injection volume varies by individual and is determined by evaluating overall facial balance.
Swelling, bruising, and serious complications?
The most common post-injection effects were pain on pressure (92.1%) and swelling (85.7%).[1] Plan for roughly 9 out of 10 people to experience such temporary reactions.
Procedure-related side effects were under 5% with both needle and cannula (blunt-tipped fine tube), with no serious adverse effects.[3] Of 282 people, 2 required hyaluronidase (a hyaluronic acid-dissolving enzyme) to manage delayed inflammation.[3].
There are reports of serious complications when hyaluronic acid enters blood vessels, potentially causing skin damage or vision loss.[9] If severe pain, skin discoloration, or vision changes occur after injection, contact your clinic immediately.
What should be confirmed during the pre-treatment consultation?
Whether Voluma XC is suitable depends on the cause of cheek hollowness, injection volume, and any additional treatments needed. An article alone cannot determine how many mL are right for your face.
During consultation, confirm the injection site, depth, volume, expected duration, how swelling or bruising will be managed, and whether the dissolving enzyme can address complications if needed.
