Details of sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a treatment for thin veins under 3mm in diameter (mainly on the back of the hand), in which an agent called Polidocanol® is adjusted to the optimal concentration and injected into the vein. The injected vein hardens and is naturally absorbed by the body in about 3 months. Because the veins on the back of the hand run in a mesh pattern, using the spread of the agent yields an even treatment effect. [About the agent used] Polidocanol® is an agent used for varicose veins of the lower limbs and various other conditions, with established safety. Polidocanol® has the characteristic that the higher the concentration, the easier it hardens, and the lower the concentration, the harder it is to harden. The easier it hardens, the higher the treatment effect, but excessive hardening makes complications such as inflammation and pigmentation more likely. Conversely, if the concentration is low it will not harden and the treatment effect will be insufficient. Therefore, it is very important to determine the appropriate concentration according to the condition, thickness, and treatment area of the vein. Our clinic adjusts the concentration in 0.1% units to harden the veins appropriately while minimizing complications. With sclerotherapy alone, the treatment time is about 10 minutes, and there are no lifestyle restrictions after treatment.

The cauterized vein is absorbed by the body in about 2-3 months and becomes inconspicuous. Note that lasers applied from outside the body have almost no vein-constricting effect, so our clinic does not use them. In addition, when thick veins are treated with the aforementioned sclerotherapy, the vein may remain, or conversely harden excessively and increase the risk of inflammation and pigmentation, so laser treatment is safer and yields a reliable treatment effect. Hearing 'cauterize the vein' may be a bit surprising, but for varicose veins of the lower limbs it is a standard treatment, and when performed by a doctor with specialized knowledge and experience, its safety is established.

Laser wavelength

1940nm represents the wavelength of the laser light. A characteristic of laser light is that the longer the wavelength, the higher the water absorption rate. Currently, the laser wavelengths of devices approved for the treatment of varicose veins of the lower limbs are only 980nm and 1470nm, but our clinic uses the 1940nm device, which has a higher absorption rate, exclusively for hand vein treatment.
