What is Algeness? How Botanical Filler Works

Algeness is a 100% natural and fully biodegradable hyaluronic acid alternative filler with agarose polysaccharides extracted from red algae as its main component. Also called a "Botanical Filler," it contains no animal-derived or synthetic ingredients, making it highly resistant to sensitization. Volume enhancement effects appear immediately after injection, and the material gradually breaks down and is naturally absorbed by the body over time.

Scientific Background of Agarose Gel

A clinical report published in the "Annals of Translational Medicine" in 2020 (DOI: 10.21037/atm.2020.02.52) verified the efficacy and safety of agarose gel-derived filler (Algeness) for cosmetic and reconstructive purposes in the face and neck. The report confirmed that Algeness demonstrated superior characteristics in three areas compared to existing fillers such as hyaluronic acid: "unique texture from hydrocolloid properties," "high tolerance and biocompatibility with tissue," and "extremely minimal immune response."

Agarose is a polysaccharide contained in the cell walls of red algae (Gelidium and Gracilaria species) and has a structure in which D-galactose and L-galactose alternate. This structure creates appropriate gel strength and elasticity, allowing it to function as a support structure within skin tissue. Rather than using a cross-linking agent (such as synthetic chemicals like BDDE), the formulation utilizes only the gel-forming properties of agarose itself, so the breakdown products consist only of natural sugars.

Treatment Process and Treatment Areas

Algeness is injected into the subcutaneous and dermal layers using ultra-fine needles or microcannulas. Local anesthetic cream or block anesthesia is used to minimize pain during the procedure. Primary treatment areas include the cheeks, nasolabial folds, corners of the mouth, chin, bridge of nose, and temples for overall facial contouring, and it can also be used for neck wrinkles and volume restoration. The injection volume and depth are adjusted by the physician according to the patient's skeletal structure, skin thickness, and wishes.

Downtime and Duration of Effects

After the procedure, mild swelling, redness, and bruising may occur at the injection sites, but these typically subside within 2-5 days. Makeup is possible from the next day onward; please avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and saunas for approximately one week. The duration of effects varies depending on the injection site, volume, and individual metabolism, but is generally reported as 6-18 months. Like hyaluronic acid, it is a temporary filler that is completely broken down and absorbed by the body.

Differences from Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Standard hyaluronic acid fillers use synthetic cross-linking agents such as BDDE (butanediol diglycidyl ether) to maintain their shape. Algeness does not use such synthetic cross-linking agents and instead utilizes only the gel-forming properties of natural agarose polymers, resulting in breakdown products consisting solely of natural sugar monomers (agarobiose). Additionally, since it contains no animal-derived ingredients (such as rooster comb or umbilical cord), it is chosen by those with allergies to animal materials or those who prefer more natural substances.
